You have worked hard to build and maintain your home and property, maybe a business as well. You have insurance in case goes wrong, but why not invest in a little prevention as well. A security system can offer you and your property protection against theft or intruders who want to damage or steal your property. They can also control access to your premises and warn you of imminent threats.

Here are four basic elements you should think about when considering a security system.

Home Security Systems

There are a number of options to choose from when it comes to home security systems. They include which type of monitoring you want to use. That is the means by which the system communicates with its monitoring centre. Your choices are by landline, cellular or broadband. You can also choose whether to have the system professionally installed or if you want to do it yourself. Some companies will only provide a service if they install itself while other give you the DIY option. Many DIY systems are wireless and can be installed in half an hour, and at the end you own the equipment and can take it with you when you move.

Fire Alarm Systems

If you only want protection in the case of fire, then you could look at having just a fire alarm system. It will consist of a number of devices that work together in order to detect the presence of smoke, fire, and harmful gases, and alert anyone who is in close proximity of the risk, as well as notifying the authorities. These alarms will use some combination of smoke or heat detectors that can ring bells or make loud noises to alert and wake anyone in the area to the danger. There are two basic types of fire alarm systems: manual and automatic. A manual system requires someone to push a button or pull a handle and are most common in apartment building and in public properties. The automatic system use sensing devices like smoke detectors to identify a problem and sound the alarm. Both types of systems can also activate sprinkler systems and to notify the fire department and emergency officials.

CCTV/ Video surveillance

There are a large variety of security systems that utilize sophisticated and highly technical cameras to help you monitor and protect your property. At one time the pictures from CCTV cameras were grainy and blurry, but now you can have full-color, full-motion and high-resolution video images. The technological advances also mean that you can have good views from indoor locations or outside, and clear at night as throughout daytime hours. Indoor cameras can now offer full 360-degree coverage to gibe you a wide area, or a fixed-lens version to focus on entrance or exit ways. Outdoor cameras are now being built to withstand any type of wind and weather and can give you panoramic coverage, even without separate outdoor lighting. They also come with many of the same features as the indoor models including remote pan and tilt control, Infrared night vision, motion detection and wireless connectivity.

Building/Commercial Solutions

There are many different ways that security systems can help protect your commercial property and buildings. These include the basic security and fire alarm systems, but they could also involve controlling and monitoring access to your property. You can use access control to limit anyone from entering your premises unless they have permission or an access card. This can be a manual or electronic system depending on the nature of your business and your hours of operation. Perimeter security is another consideration and you can monitor a wide range of your exterior property through a closed-circuit camera system. In other cases, you can install an electronic gate at the point of access that can only be opened with an access card that you provide.
